January 21, 2019 will be the one hundredth anniversary of the founding of Dáil Eireann, the legislature of an independent Irish state. That body consisted of members of the majority elected from Ireland in the December 1918 national election to the British parliament.
That event was an act of secession by a legally elected group rather than a violent act of rebellion (even though a two-year war for independence followed, and after that, a one-year civil war over the terms of independence).
The history of the Irish nation in the past hundred years has been a successful pursuit of constitutionalism and democracy.
